Why Consider Military Dog Adoption

By Marissa Velazquez

Many may think that owning a military dog is just a pipedream. This is not the case in reality; one can actually own a retired one and have fun with the well trained canine. Instead of buying yourself or your kid a dog or a puppy, you can consider the military dog adoption that even if strict, has its benefits in the long run.

It is very inexpensive compared to breeding one. You also save the lives of those dogs which otherwise could be euthanized if they don't find homes to adopt them. You can see the traits of the dog before adopting, this cannot be identified in a young puppy that is yet to develop and show their character traits.

One does not need to take the dog through house training since they have undergone extensive training and are good with taking instructions from the owner. They are well trained on obedience, chewing, hyperactivity among other skills. They in general mix well with children and chances of the kids being harmed are minimal.

In general, the entire process is much cheaper compared to buying a puppy and raising it. You don't have to incur enormous veterinary cost associated with raising a dog. For those who have checked the prices of good quality dogs like the ones in military, many cannot afford them.

When you adopt a military dog it will receive some support all through its life. These may include medical consultations and even personalized consultations in case it has some specific behavioral problems. The veterinary services they get come at special rates compared to what the vets charge out there. The adopted dogs have a chance to participate in social events together with their adopted owners.

When one considers breeding new dogs to adopting the already bred ones, it is much better to adopt. This prevents overpopulation of dogs and in turn minimizes the cruelty dogs go through when they have to be killed to control their population. When all factors are considered, adopting a dog is best.

Since the year 2000 when a law was passed to permit adopting military dogs, so many have benefited by getting new homes. The process is straight to the point and straight forward and need not be feared. As long as you prove you can take care of the dog well like it has been in the army then you have good chances. Past experience with special dogs like those of the police and rescue will put you on top f the adoption list.

Prepare to fill relevant adoption papers and put in mind the government is not responsible for what happens to you after you take the dog. Some may be left aggressive due to the experience in service. You must agree not to hold the government liable for any harm afterwards. Those who have training in dog handling are much more likely to be approved for the military dog adoption. If you have worked in any law enforcement agency and are friendly to dogs, you also have better chances of getting to adopt a retired military dog.
