By Eliza Mendoza

Miniature Dachshunds refers to the miniature version of Dachshunds, which are also called weiner dogs or hot dogs. The average weight for these animals is 8-11 pounds and the average height is somewhere between 5-7 inches. When it comes to mini versions, the smaller the animal is, the better it is considered to be. There are numerous businesses, organizations and breeders with miniature Dachshunds for sale.

The breed itself was not known about until around the sixteenth century in the country of Germany. The name itself comes from German words meaning badger and dog. Prior to the 1990s, smaller Dachshunds were given the task of going underground in order to catch small animals. Some of these smaller dogs were runts from litters and others were created intentionally by crossing the breed with Pinschers and Toy Terriers.

Most of the mini versions produced through this crossbreeding did not have the standard traits of the breed. Still, this continued until around 1910, when there was stricter criteria enforced for reproducing this breed. Nowadays, every coat type has its own breed to cross with in order to get prime results. That is, wire-haired dogs are crossed with the mini Schnauzer, smooth-haired dogs are crossed with mini Pinschers, and long-haired kinds are paired with Papillons.

Although these are common pets, there are not as many of the miniature versions available. Still, these animals may be sold at animal shelters, pet stores or directly through dog breeders. They can be purchased online and then transported to their new residence. The cost of animals will range and may be based around factors such as age and size.

The dogs are available in three main coats: wire, long and smooth. They also come in an assortment of colors, including: yellow, red, black, tan, chocolate, gray, or a combination of these colors. Their legs are short and bodies are long, allowing them to sit closer to the ground. The mini versions were created to hunt small animals above and below the ground. Dachshunds are known for having a good sense of smell that puts them above most other breeds when it comes to trailing.

Usually, the animals have a high spirit and are independent creatures. They are capable of thinking on their own and are actually quite intelligent. Every dog will have its own personality so potential owners are encouraged to, if possible, interact with the dog before they choose to purchase it.

These dogs can live a comfortable life in a rural or urban area. They are quite active and may need to spend a decent amount of time outside or be taken on frequent walks. Usually they live between 12 and 14 years. The breed is more likely to suffer from Intervertebral Disc Disease, which is often the result of obesity. The most common complications of the disease are inability to move limbs or walk, and bladder control loss.

Overall, Dachshunds are a beloved dog breed that make for great pets. There are numerous people and places that have miniature Dachshunds for sale. Cost of such animals is expected to vary considerably. Those looking to own this dog should search to see what all is available in their region.
