Some Facts About Swine

By Lianne Derocco

Hog farming supplies people all over the world with an important source of food. Not only are farm-raised hogs used to make various food products, all of the parts of the hog are used to make a myriad of important products. Here are a few more interesting facts about hogs.

We hear the words hog, pig, sow and swine sometimes used interchangeably, but each word has a special meaning. A swine is simply a domestic pig rather that a wild pig or wild boar. A hog is reference to an adult swine and a sow is female pig that has reached maturity. The word boar can refer either to a wild pig or to a male pig that has reached maturity.

History has it that pigs have been domesticated and raised for thousands of years by the Chinese people and they were the ones who raised the wild pigs for food use. The Chinese were also the ones that invented the first bacon and while different types of bacon are highly popular throughout the United States and the world at large, ham is actually the top pork product created in the U.S.

Pigs are also often thought of as dirty animals and this is generally because these are livestock who enjoy wallowing and swimming in muddy water. However pigs do not sweat which means they must find a way to keep cool and a soothing mud bath is an excellent way to relax and help them maintain a safe body temperature.

Like all domesticated kinds of livestock, swine produce great amounts of waste. The pig waste are however often stored in waste pits in the farm or in a waste lagoon. Farm owners however have to watch carefully their waste pits and lagoons, to avoid possible problems commonly encountered with agricultural waste. Solid waste materials can form into a large sludge layer on the pit or lagoon bottom and crust can also form on the top and this can cause very bad odor and also can attract hordes of flies.

Swine farm owners have options to use natural products where bacterial microbes eat away these organic waste materials and liquefy them. Agra Sphere is one natural agricultural waste product that contains naturally occurring bacteria and this is a chemical free agricultural solution that prevents sludge formation and crusting and also foaming. There is also another agricultural waste product that can help and this is Activator, an excellent option for waste pits and lagoons with sludge or already with a stubborn crust. These are natural products that can eat away the solid wastes and keep these in liquefied form that can be used as fertilizers in the farm.
